Chapter 31: Second Wedding

Maude's backyard had been turned into a white tent with a heater at each corner and a string of lights that spelled nothing at all.

It was Christmas afternoon, and the grass was frozen stiff.

Forty folding chairs stood in rows.

They were filled with neighbors from Hird Avenue, women in scarves from the dialysis clinic, and fourteen line cooks in their good shirts.

The old man in the Browns cap had worn the same tie.

I stood at the back of the tent in the green velvet dress.

The tern was pinned over my heart.

My mother stood beside me, in a long blue dress with a mask threaded with silver sequins, gripping her walker with both hands.

She was eleven days out of surgery and she had insisted on shoes.

"You're not walking me," I said. "You're supposed to be sitting."

"I'm walking you. I've had a kidney for eleven days and I intend to use it."

"Mom."

"Rosalee Pickett. I'm giving away my daughter."

I gave in.

She took my arm, and she took the walker's handle, and we went down the aisle together at the speed of a very determined snail.

Everyone stood.

At the front, under an arch of plain pine boughs, Ewan waited in a dark suit, with his hands clasped.

He had shaved his beard back to a neat line.

His face when he saw me was the same one I'd seen across the pass the first night, open all the way down.
