Chapter 13: The Offer
The Lincoln's back window slid down two inches.
"Katherine," Seamus said. "You'll catch your death on that step."
I stood in my mother's dark doorway with my boots half laced and my heart going.
I could have shut the door.
I could have called Niall, and he would have been on the street in six minutes with Kieran and a gun.
I thought about the two of them standing in that bedroom with their hands at their sides, letting me walk out.
I didn't call anyone.
"Tea," Seamus said. "In Milton. Then my driver brings you right back here, and you've lost nothing but an hour."
"Your word."
"My word is the only thing in this city that's older than your husband."
I got into the back seat.
He smelled like pipe tobacco and hair oil, and he patted my knee like I was nine.
I moved my knee.
Seamus's house in Milton had a long white porch and a lawn so green it looked painted.
In the dining room, a maid set out a silver pot and a plate of shortbread.
