Chapter 23: The Friday Paper
The man in the camel coat had a smile that cost a great deal of money.
"Gentlemen," he said to the yard. "And Mrs. Carrick. I run the New Haven docks, and I've been watching this terminal for a month."
"Have you," I said.
"You've got a fine crew. Loyal. Underpaid." He opened the briefcase on the hood of a pickup and turned it around so three hundred men could see the stacks of bills. "Double wages. A signing bonus of five thousand dollars to every man who walks to my pier on Monday. No cut, no ledger, no family business."
Nobody laughed this time.
A few men shifted their feet.
I understood it perfectly.
Five thousand dollars is a month's rent and a Christmas, and the ledger had only been a story for a week.
"I'll talk to you in the office," I said.
"Of course."
I walked in with Niall at my left and Kieran at my right, and the rival boss followed with two men carrying the briefcase.
