Chapter 15: Stitches
I brought the car down to eleven with my teeth set and my hands burning.
The doors opened on a porter's white face, and behind him the auditor lay on his cot, awake, with his eyes on the ceiling.
"He's alive," the porter said. "Your man. He's on the ledge."
Enoch lay curled on the narrow iron ledge below the sill, with one arm hooked around a bracket.
His white shirt was black down the left side.
It took three of us to haul him out onto the carpet.
"Hello," he said, and his eyes went shut.
Odile met us at the service stairs with her good arm full of linen and her mouth set in a line.
"Suite 9," she said. "Not his rooms. Yours has the better light."
"The auditor?"
"Fifteen. Behind the wall. Augustin can go on listening to the boiler room."
Augustin watched from the end of the corridor, leaning on his cane, as we carried Enoch to the lift.
"Take him to bed, Miss Corrigan," he said. "He is kept, after all."
Nobody answered him.
