At eleven forty the lobby was already full.

Gray daylight came through the revolving door, and for the first time since I had known it, the Hotel Noir looked like an ordinary building.

It was worse that way.

Everyone could see everyone's face.

The old woman with the cigarette holder sat in her armchair as she did every night, but now she wore a hat.

The two brothers stood on either side of Augustin.

The heavy man with the gold tooth stood well away from them, with his arms folded.

Lucan lounged against the front desk with a cut across his cheekbone and a bandage on one hand.

He gave me a small wave.

Beside Augustin, in a navy uniform with silver on the shoulders, stood a big gray man with a pink face and heavy, patient hands.

He kept them clasped at his belt buckle.

I had never seen him, and I knew him anyway.
