Chapter 18: The Offer
The captain brought Enoch back at three in the afternoon, and he did it with his hat in his hand.
Bail had been posted in cash, in a paper bag, by a porter nobody could name.
The cuffs came off at the front desk.
Enoch rubbed his wrists and looked at me across the lobby, and I could not tell what he was thinking.
"Suite 10," said the porter. "Mr. Lasker asks for both of you."
Augustin's suite was a mirror of mine, with the furniture turned the other way round.
A silver tea service sat on the table by the window, and the old man poured with a steady hand.
"Sit," he said. "Both of you."
Enoch stayed on his feet, and I stood beside him.
"Then I'll be brief." Augustin set down the pot. "I am not an unreasonable man. I am a tired one."
