Chapter 22: Lucan Falls
Enoch's eyes found mine over Lucan's arm.
They were gray and calm, and they did not ask me for anything.
The gun was a hand's width under his jaw, and his head was tipped back against Lucan's shoulder.
Lucan was shaking so hard the muzzle jumped.
"I'll shoot him," Lucan said. "I swear to God. Everybody back."
Nobody moved.
On the steps the old woman had stopped breathing, and the heavy man had a hand half raised.
I was six feet from them, standing in the rain with a heavy gun against my hip.
I had held that gun once before, sitting on the end of a bed with my hands shaking.
I knew exactly where the lever was.
"Lucan," I said.
"Shut up."
"Look at me."
"I said shut up!"
"Your father told you it was done," I said, and I took one slow step to the left.
