Chapter 18: The Safe
The special meeting of the board began at ten o'clock Friday morning.
Eleven directors sat around the round table in the boardroom on the fortieth floor.
Delaney's chair beside Leland was empty.
Leland sat at the head with his gold pen and his lawyer.
He gave Jonas and me the smile of a man who had already counted the votes.
"Good morning," he said. "Ms. Drexler is not a director. I assume she is here as a spectator."
"I'm here as a shareholder," I said.
I laid the signed proxy on the table.
"Forty-one point two percent of the voting stock."
"Held in my name until December 12th."
The older woman with the reading glasses picked up the page and read it all the way to the end.
She looked at Jonas, then at me, and set it down very gently.
"The secretary of the corporation will confirm that it's in order," Leland's lawyer said stiffly.
