Chapter 22: Closing
On Monday morning the courtroom had no empty seats and a line of people out the door.
The judge took the bench at eight sharp, set a leather folder at her elbow, and looked at the left table.
Leland sat alone.
Where his lawyer had been there was a chair pushed back and a legal pad with nothing on it.
"Mr. Thackeray, you are representing yourself," she said.
"I am, Your Honor."
"You understand the risk."
"I understand it perfectly."
"Then before closings, I have two motions from the respondent. Counsel."
I stood.
"The respondent calls Delaney Whitlow and one member of the board of directors, Your Honor. Briefly."
"Over what objection?"
Leland smiled and said nothing.
"None," the judge said. "Proceed."
Delaney walked to the stand in the gray coat she had worn in the alley.
She did not look at Leland, and she did not look at me.
She took the oath in a clear, flat voice.
