Chapter 13: The Release

He hung up.

I stood there holding the phone.

Wyeth was already on his feet, pulling his shirt off over his head and turning it right side out.

"He can't close without us," he said. "There's a Wainscott lien on this building. Three hundred and forty million. It has to be released at the table, in writing, or no title company in Illinois will touch it."

"Who signs the release?"

He shoved his arms into the sleeves.

"The head of real estate lending."

I looked at him.

He looked back.

"Go home," I said. "Sleep. Shave. Wear the navy suit."

"Which navy suit?"

"The one you wore to my father's dinner. He'll think you came to marry into the family."

At 9:55 the next morning I walked into the Bellmore through the front door.

The two men in gray blazers saw me from the desk and started forward.

The doorman stepped into their path.

He didn't say a word.

He just stood there in his green coat with his white gloves folded, all five feet seven of him.

They stopped.

I went up the main stairs.

The boardroom was on the mezzanine, a long paneled room with a table my great-grandfather had bought from a bank that went under in 1931.

The door was open.

The room was full.

My father at the head of the table, in a new gray suit.

Kirsten beside him in pale blue, filming the chandelier.
