Chapter 15: Blood Debt
By noon the council hall held every wolf on the north shore.
They stood along the walls and in the doorway and out on the porch steps, and the ones in front could smell my fear.
I stood at the foot of the oak table in a clean pair of scrubs.
Corwin sat at the head, gray under the eyes, with the old healer's poultice taped to his throat.
Behind me, a hall full of strangers waited for me to explain myself.
Sherman rose first.
"The accused took the last dose of blackthorn serum from the old alpha's cabinet," he said. "She took it, and she ran, and the old alpha died that morning."
Gasps went down the room.
I had expected the name, and it still hit me.
"Do you deny it?" he asked.
"No."
I said it loudly, so the back of the hall could hear.
"I was nineteen years old and I worked in your kitchen. I was sick, I was bleeding, and I did not know why."
I turned to face them.
"The cabinet door was open, and one vial sat inside, and I took it."
