Chapter 15: I Changed the Doctor
Geneva's POV
I had the forged form folded in my coat pocket when I walked into the exam room.
Stewart had put it in my hand the night before, standing on my parents' porch.
I had looked at my own signature for a long time.
It was good enough that I wanted to apologize to it.
Now I sat on the paper-covered table with my feet swinging and waited for Dr. Kemp.
The door opened, and a woman I had never met came in with my chart.
She was about fifty, with reading glasses on a cord.
"Ms. Cassidy, I'm taking over your case," she said. "Dr. Kemp has transferred you to my service."
I stared at her.
"Did something happen?"
"Nothing's wrong," she said. "He asked me this morning, and he asked me to say I'm glad to do it."
She went through the scan results and the pain, and she checked my pulse and my eyes.
She was kind and quick and said nothing I didn't already know.
When she left, I stayed where I was, with my pulse jumping in my throat.
Giles was in the corridor outside, standing against the wall with his arms folded.
He had no white coat on.
"You said a rule," I said.
"I did."
"You told me on the roof it would be the worst thing you could do to me."
"I know what I said." He pushed off the wall. "I changed the doctor."
"That's a loophole."
"It's a rule I'm following. I stopped being your doctor at eight this morning, and I'm going to drive you to Pittsburgh for the trial screening as a person who wants to."
"You don't have to."
"I know I don't."
I looked at him, and I could feel my own hands wanting to reach for something.
"Is this because I'm dying?" I said.
