Chapter 13: No Lies

I dropped the phone on the quilt.

"Rule two," I said. "No lies between us. You made me say it in a church lot, and you nodded."

"I know."

"Then every word now. Start with the night she died, and don't skip the part where you looked at me and said you didn't know whose car that was."

Daniel pulled the sheet up and sat very straight on the edge of Kit's bed.

He did not reach for his clothes.

"Fourteen months ago I borrowed Camilla's tablet to check a schedule," he said. "A message from Mitchell came up. It said he couldn't stop thinking about the way she laughed in the stairwell."

"And you said nothing."

"I said nothing. I slept on the couch the next night and the next, and she never asked why." His voice was low and even. "I thought if I waited, it would end by itself."

"That's not the night Kit died."

"No."

He looked at his hands.

"At five-fifty Mitchell told me what he needed. Mute the alarms, hold her breathing by hand, keep my eyes on the monitor and off the table."

"And you did."

"Yes."

"Where was Camilla?"

He took a long breath.

"Standing on the other side of the bed, in a surgical gown, with a syringe from her pocket. She pushed it into Kit's IV line. Her hand was shaking, and Mitchell put his hand over hers, and Kit's pressure dropped."

I had worked eleven years in an ICU.

I knew what dropped like that, and how fast.

The room tilted, and I put my palm flat on the cold floorboards.

"You watched your wife kill my sister," I said.

"I held the bag and I watched." His mouth twisted. "She turned around after, and she looked at me, and she said, 'You were never here, Danny.' She still sleeps in my apartment. She still says it some nights."
