Chapter 14: The Offer

Daniel's POV

I listened to Mara's car go down the gravel drive until I could not hear it anymore.

My phone had stopped ringing, and then it started again.

I answered on the twenty-seventh call.

"Where are you?" Camilla said. Her voice was tight and fast. "Mitchell's called me four times. He can't find Mara."

"She's at her father's lake house. I came up to say I was sorry about the OR."

"You what?"

"I had to, Cami. She hit me, and she left." I pressed the heel of my hand against my eye. "She's in a bad way. Somebody should stay close to her tonight. She isn't safe alone."

It was not a lie.

It was the only true sentence I could find that would send Camilla to Mara's house and keep Mitchell's hands off her before dark.

Camilla was quiet for a moment.

"You're a good man, Danny," she said. "Go home and sleep."

I put Kit's quilt straight on the bed, because I could not leave it the way we had left it.

Then I drove to work, because not showing up would be the loudest thing I could do.

At four o'clock Mitchell's secretary called me up to the fifth floor.

The chief's office was warm and smelled of coffee.

On the desk, between the monitor and a crystal paperweight, stood a framed photograph of Kit at the wedding, eighteen years old, with her mouth full of cake.

I looked at it and looked away.

"Sit, Danny."

Mitchell poured me a cup and pushed it across.

He looked tired and sad, and I hated that he looked sad.

"Camilla says you drove up to the lake to see my wife," he said. "She isn't sleeping. She's been very hard on you."
