Chapter 4: Sealed
On Monday morning I put on my work clothes and told Mitchell I was going to my own hospital to talk to my manager about leave.
He kissed me at the door and said to call him if I felt dizzy.
I drove across the river to Metro General.
The records office was a counter on the ground floor with a ticket machine and a sign that said Health Information Management.
I took a number and sat down between a man with a cast and a woman holding a toddler.
When my number came up, I slid three things across to the clerk.
My nursing license, a letter from the funeral director naming me as Kit's next of kin, and a request I had written by hand the night before.
I had written it in plain words, so nobody could say they didn't understand it.
"I'm requesting my sister Kit Clendenin's complete chart from the night of the crash," I said. "Including the anesthesia record."
The clerk was a woman in her fifties with a lanyard full of pins.
She typed for a while and then stopped typing.
"I'm sorry. This chart is sealed."
"Sealed by who?"
"It says peer review hold. Ordered by Dr. Bannister."
I felt the heat climb up my neck, and I kept my face still.
"He's my husband. He can't seal my sister's chart from me."
"He's the department chair, ma'am. He can seal any chart in his department." She turned her screen a little away from me. "The anesthesia file has a separate flag too. It says no release, by order of the chair."
"Both of them?"
"Both."
"Is that normal when a patient dies?"
She pressed her lips together.
"I've been here nineteen years," she said, very quietly, "and I've seen it twice."
