Chapter 13: Danny

I stood up so fast my chair went over.

Aphrodite didn't. She was buttering a roll.

"Where is he?"

"Somewhere warm, darling. He's perfectly comfortable."

"Where?"

"My office. He's never seen the view." She set the knife down. "You can come and get him. Alone."

Behind me, a chair scraped.

The candles on every table along the roof leaned toward the next table and went out.

Hades was on his feet.

The cold came off him so hard my breath showed.

Aphrodite finally looked up at him.

"You can't come in, sweetheart," she said. "It's my house. You know the rules better than anyone."

She smiled at me. "Alone, Clary. Or the doves take him to the Isles tonight. He's so young. I wonder how many years he has."

She knew exactly how many.

So did I.

Sixty-one, give or take a winter.

She stood, kissed the air near my cheek, and walked to the elevator in her gold sandals.

I grabbed my bag with the phone still recording in it.

Hades caught my arm at the stairs.

His hand was cold enough to burn.

"Let me take the building apart," he said.

"Can you?"

"From the outside. Brick by brick."

"With Danny on the fortieth floor."

His jaw worked.

He didn't let go.

"Rule two," I said. "You don't decide this. I do."

"Then ask me to do something. Anything."

I looked at him.

"Wait for him on the sidewalk," I said. "When he comes out, take him home. Don't let him go back in for me. He'll try."

"And you?"

"I'm going to get locked in somewhere."

"Clary."

"She wants me where she can watch me till Halloween." I swallowed. "The only place she keeps anything is the vault. I want to be in that vault more than I've ever wanted anything."

He understood a second after I said it.

His face didn't change, but his hand slid down my arm and closed over mine.
