The game started twenty minutes late, and it was the best hockey I had ever seen.
Rhett scored in the first period, then again in the second, and the hospital families in the front rows stood up screaming each time.
The boy in the blue beanie held a sign he had made himself.

Harbor Ridge won four to two.
Nobody left the arena afterward.
They stood in the aisles and hugged strangers.
The lunch lady passed out hot pierogi from a cardboard box near the concessions.
Dottie led a cheer for the Gazette that made no sense and was perfect.
Kenzie came down to the boards at the end with her phone in her hand.
"The donation total just hit its record," she said. "Sixty-six thousand dollars."
"For the pediatric floor?"
"For the floor. Plus the new equipment." She let out a shaky laugh. "I'm so tired, Anja."
"Me too."
"Can I sit with you at lunch on Monday?"
"Bring snacks," said Dottie, appearing from nowhere. "I'm in charge of snacks now."
