Chapter 23: Blanche's Choice
The barge bumped against the bottom step.
I was off it before the bargeman had a rope round the post.
The six men in plum livery closed up in front of me, shoulder to shoulder.
"Morning, Elinor," Father called down from the top of the stairs.
"You've been on the river all night, I hear. Again."
A laundress near the wall snorted.
"Let go of her," I said.
"Of whom? My daughter?" He gave Blanche's arm a little shake. "I'm taking my daughter for a drive."
"In her nightgown."
"She was in a hurry to see her bridegroom."
Blanche stood very straight beside him with her bare feet on the wet stone.
Her face was white.
She looked down the stairs at me and gave me one small, steady nod.
"Where's my foreman?" said Father.
"I don't know what you mean."
"He went down Tanners' Stair last night on a handcart, under a pile of sacks. With his wife and his brat." Father smiled. "His Grace's men watch that stair. They watch it for me."
Alistair came down the barge plank behind me, ducking under the rope.
"Sir Oswin," said Alistair. "Let go of Miss Pellow."
