"It was his copper!" Father shouted.
"It was his warehouse," said the Duke, at the same moment.
"Majesty, I'm a plain tradesman. His Grace came to me eleven years ago. He said the crown would pay triple for a bright green, and he knew where to get the green."
"I approved bills, cousin. In good faith. I can't be expected to taste every leaf that a tradesman paints in his own rope store."
"In good faith!" Father's face had gone from tallow to purple. "You took half in coin every quarter day. You counted it in front of me."
"I counted nothing."
"You counted it twice! You always count it twice!"
Someone at the long tables laughed, high and wild, and then clapped a hand over her mouth.
The King had sat back in his chair.
He just let them talk.
"Who paid for the pamphlet?" the Duke said to the hall. "Ask him. Ask him who wanted his own daughter called a poisoner."
"You paid for it! In your own livery coin, you fool, the Prime Minister's got one in his pocket!"
