Chapter 16: Dina

Lacey's POV

Dina opened her door on the fourth knock, in her scrubs, with a cheese knife in her hand.

I had been standing on her porch for ten minutes, and Camille's tire marks were still fresh on the curb behind me.

"Don't," Dina said.

"Don't what?"

"Don't look at me with that face. It's the one you use on a bad invoice."

"Who did you send the video to, Dina?"

She put the cheese knife down on the hall table very carefully.

Then she sat down on her own floor, right there in the hall, with her back against the wall.

"I want you to know I was going to tell you on Saturday," she said. "Then Silvan came, and then I wanted to throw up."

"Dina."

"At 3:51 on Sunday I got a DM from Camille DeGraff's assistant."

I sat down on the floor across from her.

"She said Camille had seen the 'adorable chaos' on Gerald's live feed and loved your account. She said if I sent my footage, Camille would give you a shout-out to her one-point-nine million."

"A shout-out."

"For your bakes. Lace, you have two hundred thousand followers and she has two million. I thought, finally."

"You sent her the forty seconds."

"At 3:58. Before I posted it. I didn't know she was the ex. I didn't know she was going to cut it."

"You do know who she is. You follow her."

"I follow everyone. That's not knowing."

Her chin was trembling, and I had known her since we were nine.

"Is that the only thing you sent her?" I asked.

"Yes."

"Is that all she gave you?"

Dina closed her eyes.

"There's a basket," she said.

It sat on her kitchen counter, wrapped in cellophane, with a pink bow the size of a dinner plate.
