Chapter 21: Payday

Tae put the green ledger on the bed, between Nanami's knees and the quilt, and opened it to the last page.

Nanami put her glasses on and read.

The final line was in fresh ink, still shining.

"Owed to T. Mizuno, auditor. Nine thousand, six hundred and fifteen crowns. Assigned to the castle's household, in full."

"You can't assign a wage you never drew," said Nanami.

"Then draw it, madam auditor," said her grandmother. "Draw it, and take my signature."

"The whole household."

"The people who stayed. I was the only one who left, and I would like to pay for it."

Tae signed under the line with the pen from her cardigan pocket.

Her hand shook only a little.

Nanami looked up at her, and found she had nothing sharp left to say.

She wrote her own name underneath as witness.

Three days later, at noon, the courtyard was swept, and two carts stood in the gateway with iron-bound chests.

The Thrones' treasury clerk had counted the restitution twice and counted it a third time in front of Nanami, with his lips moving.
