Nanami ran down the ridge path in her stocking feet with the cardigan in her arms.
Dravan ran behind her, and behind him ran Gorund, who could not be told to stay.
The Widow's House had smoke in its chimney and a lamp in the window.
Tae sat in the rocking chair by the stove with a blanket over her knees.
A tea tray stood on the table in front of her.
"You are all very loud," she said. "I only wanted my own stove."
Nanami stopped in the doorway, bent over and gasping.
"You left your glasses."
"I have another pair. I wanted you to run."
"That's a horrible thing to say."
"It was a good test of your wind. Sit down, all of you. The tea is getting cold."
They sat on the floor and on the stools, because there were not enough chairs.
Tae poured four cups, small and brown, and handed them round.
"I'd like to say some things while I can still breathe," she said.
"To Gorund, thank you for the stew. To Dravan, you are still a terrible hand with a ruler, and I am very proud of you."
Dravan put his cup down.
He could not look at her, and he did not try.
"And to Nanami."
Tae took the counting frame from the table, where Nanami had set it down, and held it out.
