Chapter 18: Aurelan City
Aurelan City woke to a demon walking through its gates.
Rina saw it from the carriage window in the grey first light.
Shutters opened, crowds gathered on the cobbles, and a baker dropped a tray of loaves in the street.
They had ridden all night.
She had slept against Kaldrith's shoulder with his coat over her knees.
When she woke the city walls were going by.
"They are staring," he said.
"Let them."
"Rina, I have been here once. I came to sign the Ember treaty. They threw rotten fruit."
She took his hand and laced her fingers through his claws.
"Then this time you've got a bride in the carriage," she said, "and they're going to have to throw it at me."
Nobody threw anything.
The carriage drew up at the foot of the palace steps.
A hundred courtiers in silk and jewels stood in rows on either side, and every face turned toward the door.
Kaldrith stepped down first.
The murmur went up the steps.
Then he turned and held out his hand.
Rina took it, and climbed down into the cold, and stood next to him in a blue travelling cloak with her head up.
She did not let go.
She walked up the long stairs with her hand in his, past the rows of whispering lords.
She felt the crescent on her shoulder glow under the cloak.
The throne room was white marble and gold.
King Gerault sat at the far end in a crimson velvet coat.
He had a thin crown on silver hair and a smile on a handsome, kindly, bearded face.
He rose when they entered.
It was a pretty gesture, and the court sighed at it.
"My dear Lady Wynne," he said.
His voice rolled warm and generous down the hall.
"We were told you had been unwell."
"I wept for you."
"Come, let me look at you."
