Chapter 8: The Observatory

The observatory was the highest room in the keep, a round tower with a glass roof and a floor of black marble.

There was nothing in it but a stone bench, a brass star-glass on a tripod, and the whole night sky pouring in over their heads.

Rina stood in the middle of it in his black coat and nothing else.

Kaldrith shut the door behind them and turned the key.

"Why here?" he said.

"Because tomorrow the Saint arrives and the whole keep will be full of people." She looked up. "Tonight I want the sky."

He crossed the floor.

He stopped in front of her and ran one claw, very lightly, down the lapel of the coat.

"I want to ask you for something," Rina said.

"Ask."

She took the black silk sash from his waist where it hung, loosened, and put it in his hand.

"Tie my wrists."

His eyes flared.

"Rina."

"Behind my back. Not tight. Just enough that I can't touch you."

"Why?"

"Because you've done everything I told you for six nights." Her voice was rough. "I want you to take something. I want to be the one who has nothing to do but feel it."

A long, dark silence.

The ember light ran slowly under his throat.

"You are certain."

"I'm begging you."

He made a sound low in his chest.

Then he took her by the shoulders and turned her around.

She felt the coat slide off her arms and fall.

The cool air touched her skin.
