Chapter 13: Rose Without a Mask

I didn't stand up.

I kept the green book shut on my knees with both hands flat on the cover.

Rose crossed the room in her pink dressing gown and sat down in Edie's chair by the fire.

She held her small hands out to the flames.

"I'm so cold," she said. "Lakes are horrible, aren't they?"

"You'd know. You went in on purpose."

She laughed.

It wasn't the laugh she used at court, light and surprised.

It was low, and it went on a little too long.

"I really thought you'd stand there," she said. "The old Vivi would have. She'd have stood on that pier screaming for help while I went under. Two hundred people would have watched her not help."

"And if nobody had pulled you out?"

"Lucan's footman was in the boathouse with a rope." She shrugged. "Nobody drowns at the Emperor's party. It's bad for the Emperor."

I stared at her.

She'd said Lucan's name like it was nothing.

"Give me the book," she said.

"No."

"It's my book, really. It's all about me."
