Rose stayed in her curtsey.

"Of course, Majesty," she said. "I only meant she was tired."

"Go to bed, Lady Delmar."

She rose and went down the corridor with small, quick steps.

At the corner she looked back at me once.

Then she was gone.

Edie was still holding the jug.

"Put that inside," the Emperor said to her. "Then go and fill another one."

She set it inside and went, with a look that said she'd be listening from the stairs.

The Emperor and I stood in my doorway.

His wet shirt was stuck to his chest.

I could see him shivering, just a little.

"You should be in front of a fire," I said.

"So should you. You're standing in the door."

"How much did you hear?"

"Enough to know she offered you something and you said yes very fast."

I held the book tighter.

"She came to thank me," I said.

"Vivi."

"She did."

He looked at me for a long time.

"Every time you lie to me," he said, "you look at my collar instead of my face."

I looked at his face.
