Chapter 15: Seven Evenings

"Seven evenings," I said.

"Seven."

"And you'll sign it. Whatever I say."

"Whatever you say."

I looked at the empty line at the bottom of the paper.

Seven evenings, and then a road out of the book.

Rose would wait a week.

She'd have to.

"Fine," I said.

He folded the paper and put it back inside his coat, over his heart.

The first evening, he taught me chess.

We sat in his study at a table by the window, with a board of black and white stone between us.

Vivi's hands didn't know chess.

Mine didn't either.

He beat me in nine moves.

Then I took his queen with a knight, by accident, and he stared at the board like I'd slapped him.

"Again," he said.

"It's nearly the bells."

"Again."

The second evening, he asked me what I was afraid of.

"Water," I said.

"You swam across my lake."

"I didn't say I couldn't do it. I said I was afraid of it."

He moved a pawn and didn't say anything for a long time.

The third evening, he took me up a narrow stair to the top of the east wing.

There was a round room under a glass roof, with a brass telescope on three legs.

"My mother built this," he said. "She liked to know where everything was."

He showed me the stars.

They were the wrong stars.

I knew every constellation over the bus stop on my old street, and not one of them was up there.
