Chapter 17: The North Tower

The window had no glass.

By the time the moon came up, I couldn't feel my fingers.

Nobody brought a blanket.

Nobody brought anything.

In the book, the guards fed Vivi once a day, and on the third day they forgot.

I sat on the cot with my knees pulled up under my skirt and looked at the little lines scratched into the wall.

I didn't add one.

I wasn't going to start counting.

Somewhere far below, a door opened.

I heard boots on the stairs.

They came up slowly, steadily, all one hundred and eighty steps.

Only one person.

I stood up and backed against the wall.

The key turned.

The iron door swung in.

The Emperor stood on the top step with a lantern in one hand and a heavy grey blanket over his arm.

He was alone.

No coat, no gold. A plain dark shirt and riding boots.

He came in and shut the door behind him.

He set the lantern on the stool.

Then he crossed the room and wrapped the blanket around my shoulders, and he didn't let go of the edges.
