Chapter 7: Thirty-Six Letters

I set the shoe box on Anson's kitchen table and told him what was in it.

He stood very still.

"She kept them?"

"All thirty-six. None of them are opened."

He picked up the top envelope, the oldest, and turned it over in his big hands.

"I wrote that one in the car outside your house," he said. "At four in the morning."

"Then read it to me."

"It's yours."

I slit it open with Dot's kitchen scissors, using my right hand, and unfolded one sheet of paper.

It had five lines.

I came at twenty past three, and there were ambulance lights, and your mother told me you'd asked her never to let me in. If that's true, tell me one time and I'll leave you alone for good. If it isn't, tell me you're alive.

I read it twice.

Then I put it down on the table very carefully.

"I never said that," I told him. "I never asked her for anything."

"I know," he said. "I know that now."

"You came every week for a month."

"Eight Sundays, and she opened the door a crack each time and told me you couldn't see anyone. Then I wrote."

"I thought you'd stopped caring."

"I thought you'd chosen him," Anson said. "You were still engaged to my brother the day after you kissed me. I thought you took the note and went home and married him anyway, and that your mother was only passing along your wishes."

"I was going to end it. Then I found the video, and I did it in front of everyone instead."

"Eight days, Jo. You said you'd leave him on the dock, and eight days later you were still wearing his ring."

"And I stood up in front of two hundred people with a phone in my hand," I said, and my voice came out harder than I meant. "I looked at the door the whole time, and you weren't there."
