Chapter 14: The Shoe Shop
The girl in the doorway was crying before the bell over Pasquale's door stopped ringing.
She had a garment bag folded over both arms.
Behind her, my plywood sign leaned in the window of the old shoe shop. MADE TO FIT. ALTERATIONS. DRESSES. ALL SIZES.
Four days of scrubbing with Dad and Pasquale had got it there, and Serena's whole nine hundred had bought the used machine in the back.
"Are you open?" the girl said. "The sign says all sizes."
"We open Monday," I said. "But come in."
She was maybe twenty-two, with a round face and red eyes and a puffy coat.
She laid the garment bag on the counter.
"I'm getting married in five weeks," she said. "My grandmother lives on the next block. She said you used to be Pasquale's."
"It's still Pasquale's. I'm borrowing it."
Pasquale waved from the stool by the window. She waved back weakly.
Dad was in the corner on a shoe crate with his cane across his knees, pretending to read the paper.
"I ordered my dress online," she said. "It came, and it's wrong. Everything's wrong. I went to six shops."
She unzipped the bag.
It was ivory satin, a size twenty-four.
The bodice was cut for a straight figure with nothing to it. The straps were in the wrong place for anybody's shoulders.
"The first place said they don't work on plus sizes," she said. "The second one said it would cost more than the dress. The one on Halsted told me to lose twenty pounds and then come back."
