Chapter 36: The Sign
"Nothing," I said.
"Thirteen weekends of nothing."
"I was looking for her. I didn't find her."
Vito picked up the statement and folded it into quarters, slowly, the rings clicking.
"You told me Milwaukee was a fifty-year-old nurse."
"It was. I kept looking anyway."
He studied me for a long moment.
I'd spent a year learning that face. I knew when it was deciding something.
"You know what I like about you, kid?" he said. "You're honest about being stupid."
He tossed the folded statement at my chest. I caught it.
"Here's the rule. You find her, you bring her to me. Her and Joe both. You work for me, so anything you find is mine first. Understand?"
"Yes."
"Say it."
"Anything I find is yours first."
"Good boy."
I went back to my desk and opened the books for his parking lots and looked at them for an hour without seeing a number.

I'd been drawing Vito a map.
I never went back to Milwaukee.
