Chapter 37: The Sitdown
We talked in the trailer, because he was too old for the cold.
He sat in Joe's chair without asking. I stood by the space heater.
He didn't look at the sketchbooks on the desk. He was careful not to, and I noticed him being careful.
"Vito's drinking at lunch now," he said. "He signed a lease last month you told him not to sign. It cost the table half a million dollars."
"I know. I told him."
"We know you told him. That's why I'm here."
"Every dollar this family made in two years came through your hands. Every one of us at that table knows it. Vito knows it too, and he hates you for it."
"What do you want?"
"Thursday. The back room on Taylor Street. Seven of us and him." He looked at me. "And you."
At the door he stopped and looked at Joe's sign through the window, lit by his car's headlights.
"You don't have to tell me why you keep it," he said. "But a man who keeps a sign like that has something he wants. Remember who knew."
Then he went down the steps and his car backed out along the gravel.
Thursday night I put on a dark suit.
