Augusto sat.
He did it slowly, with one hand on the table, like the chair might not be there.
I handed him back his pen, folded his paper in half, unsigned, and dropped it in his cup on top of the magazine.
I didn't stand up to rule. I'd decided that on the floor of our bedroom at dawn.
I'd sit where they'd put me, and they'd listen to a woman sitting down.
"You asked for the hand that did it," I said. "I'm ruling on it."
"It was yours."
The old men outside the window had stopped pretending to drink their espresso.
"You'll keep it," I said. "Both of them. I don't take hands. I don't take thumbs."
At the window table, Pasquale made a sound into his napkin.
"Your seat at this table ends tonight. Your men answer to the table from tonight, not to you."
"Your house goes to your grandchildren."
"Friday you leave Chicago. The table buys the ticket. Nothing else."
Augusto's eyes went down the long table, one face at a time, looking for one friend.
Nobody gave him one.
"Hands," I said. "In front of Taylor Street."
