Every face in the front dining room was on me.
The bride had both hands over her mouth. The baker's sister-in-law had finally stopped not speaking to her.
"My year ends in May," I said.
"Donna..."
"You asked me at a dinner, in front of my neighbors' suppers. That's how Augusto asked me the first time."
I picked up my good shears off the tablecloth and put them back in my sewing basket.
"If the table wants something from me, the table can ask me properly."
The captain in glasses bowed his head an inch.
"Properly, Donna."
I left Vito's pistol where it lay, open, on the cloth in front of Augusto's empty chair.
The man from the waiting room picked it up when I walked past him, and fished the magazine out of the espresso with a spoon.
Damiano was at the front door, holding it.
Pasquale went out first, then Dad on Pasquale's arm, because the boy still had his cane.
On the bench under the red awning sat two old men with their espresso, and Rita, and her brother.
They hadn't gone anywhere.
The boy was sitting with his legs straight out in front of him, both canes across his knees, eating a cannoli somebody had given him.
