Chapter 19: The Gate

Royce's POV

I read the email once, and then I got out of bed.

Mari did not wake.

She lay on her side with her hair across my pillow, and her left hand was still closed around my wrist.

I had to take her fingers off me one at a time.

Her palm was warm, and the rope scar made a hard line across it.

I stood in the dark holding her hand longer than I needed to.

I put it down on the sheet.

She sighed, and I felt that sigh in my knees.

I dressed in the hall and drove to Galena Park with the heater off, because I wanted the cold.

At four in the morning the terminal was lit white and empty.

The guard at the main gate put his hand to his cap and did not ask.

I parked at the foot of Dock Six.

The gate has been chained since the fire.

I am the only person on the property who has the key, besides Teo, and I opened it with my fingers shaking.

The chain fell on the concrete with a long clatter.
