Chapter 18: The Bill

The emergency doctor said Donna had missed two dialysis treatments.

"Her potassium is dangerous," he said. "We're running her through tonight. Did no one tell you she was skipping?"

Donna lay on the gurney with a tube in her arm and her chin up.

"The county unit called Thursday," she said. "They told me my chair was gone. A flag on my account. I didn't want you worrying while you were rescuing a man."

"Mom."

"Don't Mom me. It was sixty-one thousand dollars."

The laundromat owner had brought in the mail she'd hidden.

Caleb unfolded it on the bed rail.

THAYER FAMILY CLINIC SERVICES. STATEMENT OF SERVICES RENDERED. Transport, lodging, clinic placement and two cancelled chairs, $61,400.

Under it, in small print, was a notice that the balance had been sent to collections on Friday, the day I went to the house.

Caleb read it twice and folded it very small.

"She billed your mother for the lake house," he said quietly.

At eleven, a woman in a white coat came down the hall with a clipboard and a face I could not read.

"Mrs. Marrin?" she said. "I'm from the transplant program. We have a donor kidney."

I could not feel my hands.

"Your blood type, your antibodies, your place on the list," the coordinator said. "It's a match, and it's here. If she's in the operating room by six, we go."

"Yes," Donna said. "Yes, I'll go."

"There's a problem."

A man in a lanyard had come up behind her, with a tablet and an apologetic face.

"I'm the financial counselor. The transplant program won't schedule a patient with an active collections flag on her file. It's a protocol. The Thayer Family Clinic balance is showing."

"That bill's a fraud," I said.
