I Built My Biker Husband a Home, Then Caught Him Naked Beneath His Mistress! novel · Chapter 2 of 24
Chapter 2: Not My House
Boone arrives to collect his things with Tawny on the back of his bike; Tawny announces she is pregnant, Boone says it might be his, and he agrees to a divorce.
Boone came up my driveway at four o'clock on Sunday with four of his brothers behind him.
Faye had driven in from campus at six that morning and had not left my side since.
She stood on the porch next to me with her arms crossed.
She had heard the whole thing from a group chat before I could tell her myself.
"Is that a moving truck?" she asked.
"It's a pickup."
"Then they brought less than I thought."
Boone cut the engine and swung his leg off the Harley.
Tawny climbed down from the seat behind him.
She had her arms around his waist the whole way here.
Faye had asked to ride on that seat when she was six, and again at sixteen, and he had said no both times.
I watched Tawny straighten her jacket.
It was his old jacket, the brown one I had patched at the elbow.
"You brought her to my house?" I said.
"I brought the truck to get my things," Boone said.
"And her?"
"She goes where I go for now."
Rusty Cobb stepped out of the pickup's passenger side with his hands up, smiling.
"Nobody wants a scene, Ro. Boone's just gonna grab his clothes and his tools. Quick and clean."
I looked at his hands.
They were shaking a little, and I decided it was nerves for me.
"His clothes are in two duffel bags by the door," I said.
"I packed them at dawn."
Boone looked at the bags and then at me.
For a second I thought he might say something real.
"You didn't have to do that."
"I didn't have to wait up for you for twenty-three years either, and I did."
The brothers shifted their feet.
I stepped to the edge of the porch so every one of them could hear me.
"Every Friday I made supper and every Friday it went in the fridge."
"Every birthday of Faye's, you rode in at midnight."
"I paid for this land and I built this house, and I wanted one night in it with you in it."
"That's all I wanted, Boone."
His jaw worked, but he didn't answer.
Tawny didn't wait for him to.
She stepped up beside him and put her palm flat on her stomach.
"I didn't want to say this today," she said. "But I think you should know before you throw him out on the street."
"Know what?"
"I'm eight weeks pregnant."
Faye made a sound in her throat.
Somebody behind the truck said, "Aw, hell."
Rusty looked at the ground with a face that said he was sorry for all of us.
I kept my eyes on Boone.
"Is it yours?"
He took a long time.
He looked at Tawny's hand on her stomach, and then at the dirt, and then at his boots.
"It might be," he said.
I had been ready for the girl.
I had been ready for the lie.
I had not been ready for the word might, said in front of my daughter, on the porch I built with my own hands.
Under my jacket, my own baby sat a few weeks along, with no one but me knowing it was there.
I put my hand on the porch rail so it would hold me up.
"Mom," Faye said softly.
"I'm fine."
Tawny's voice went small and wet.
"So you understand why he can't just leave me. Where would I go?"
"Not my house," Faye said.
She stepped in front of me.
"You are not putting that girl in my mother's bed, Dad."
"Faye, stay out of this."
"I've stayed out of it for twenty-two years!"
Her voice cracked on the last word, and he flinched.
It was the first time I had seen him flinch at her in a long time.
"Come on, honey," Rusty said gently, and reached for her shoulder.
Faye shook him off.
I walked down two steps so I stood level with Boone.
He was close enough that I could smell the engine oil on him, the same smell that used to mean he was home.
"Take your bags," I said.
"The deed is in my name. If anyone from your club sets foot past my gate again, I'll call the sheriff."
Boone picked up the first duffel bag.
Then he put it down and straightened his shoulders.
"You want to do it like that, Ro?"
"There's no other way left."
He looked at me for a long moment, and I saw something cross his face that I couldn't read.
It might have been anger.
It looked more like relief.
"Fine," he said. "Then we do it right. I'll have the papers drawn up Monday."
"Divorce."
"Yeah."
He said it in one flat breath, with no fight in it at all.
Tawny's hand slid through his arm.
My legs held, but only just.
Then Faye took my hand, and the two of us watched my husband pick up his bags and ride away with another woman on the seat our daughter was never allowed to sit on.
