Chapter 20: Subpoena
Nobody spoke for a second.
The court reporter's fingers waited over her keys.
"How many recordings?" the lawyer said.
"All of them. Ninety-one files."
"Including any recordings made outside of scheduled interview sessions?"
My lawyer touched my arm under the table.
"She's answered the question she was asked," she said.
The lawyer sat back.
He turned to Grady and murmured something.
Grady murmured back, and I watched his pinky ring tap the glass tabletop three times, fast.
"Then we'll be serving a subpoena today," the lawyer said, "for every recording, in its original format, on its original device, along with any copies."
"Fine," my lawyer said.
He blinked. "Fine?"
"You'll have every file by Friday. All ninety-one." She smiled pleasantly. "Copies to you, copies to the court. The original device stays with us, sealed, and we'll make it available for your expert anytime."
"We only really need..." Grady said.
