Chapter 21: Dane Begs

I didn't open the door.

I stood on my side of the glass with the keys in my hand.

"Say it from there," I said.

"Greer, come on. It's me."

"I know who it is. That's why the door's locked."

He leaned his forehead against the glass.

Up close, under the parking lot light, he looked terrible.

His eyes were red. He hadn't shaved. He was wearing a Rainmakers hoodie with the hood half up, like he didn't want anyone on 92nd Avenue to recognize him.

Nobody on 92nd Avenue was looking.

"Are you drunk?" I said.

"No." He laughed, not the media laugh, not the ugly one. Something smaller. "I haven't had a drink since your deposition. I keep thinking I'll say something."

"You already said something. Into my recorder."

He closed his eyes.

"Five minutes," he said. "Please. I drove out here by myself. Nobody knows I'm here. Not Grady. Not Skye."

I thought about it for a long time.

Then I unlocked the door, stepped back, and let him into the lobby.
