Chapter 22: Peg Falls
Beau got to the rink twenty minutes after the Porsche left.
He found me on the lobby mat and sat down next to me, bad leg out straight, and didn't ask me to get up.
"He cried," I said.
"Did he say it?"
"He said it to me. Not to you."
Beau nodded slowly.
"Then he didn't say it," he said.
We sat there until midnight with our backs against the snack bar.
On Thursday, a courier brought the cream envelope back.
This time it was addressed to Peg, not me.
Penhaligon Brewing. Offer to purchase Lents Ice Arena. Taxes paid in full, plus two hundred thousand dollars. Open until Sunday, August thirtieth.
Peg read it on the loading dock and tucked it in her cardigan pocket.
"Recycling," she said.
I didn't see her put it in the recycling.
On Saturday, ninety-one kids came to First Ice.
Peg was in a good mood.
She'd been in a good mood all week, which should have been my first clue.
At ten, the bug skated over to the booth window and banged on it.
"Peg! Peg! Miss Greer did a jump at the fundraiser. Can you do a jump?"
