Chapter 30: Auction
I didn't sleep.
At five, I refreshed the bank page.
Nothing.
At six, I made Peg oatmeal she didn't eat and coffee she wasn't allowed to drink.
At seven, Beau pulled into the driveway behind the rink in his truck, wearing a collared shirt I'd never seen before.
"You ironed," I said.
"I own an iron. I've used it twice." He looked at my face. "Still nothing?"
"Still nothing."
At seven-thirty, we drove downtown anyway.
The county building is a big pale block on Hawthorne, by the bridge.
The tax office is on the first floor, with a long counter and plastic chairs.
There's a sign that says TAKE A NUMBER.
The auction was across the river at ten, on the courthouse steps.
Lents Ice Arena was item fourteen.
I took a number.
Forty-two.
We sat in the plastic chairs, Peg in the middle in her navy cardigan, her pocketbook on her knees.
At eight, the front doors opened, and the bug walked in.
