Chapter 7: Sign-Off

The publisher flew the editor out from New York for it.

They booked a glass conference room on the twentieth floor of a bank tower downtown, with a view of the river and a tray of tiny sandwiches nobody ate.

I wore my one good blazer.

I brought my laptop, the final manuscript, and nothing else.

Dane was already there.

He sat at the head of the table in a navy suit, his Cup cap swapped for a haircut that probably cost more than my rent.

Skye sat beside him, scrolling her phone, her sunglasses pushed up into her hair.

Grady stood at the window with his hands in his pockets.

"Greer!" The editor hugged me. She was small and nervous and smelled like airport coffee. "Thank you for coming in person. This is so much easier."

"Sure," I said.

Dane didn't stand up.

"Look who decided to show up for work," he said.

"I don't work for you."

"You're still getting paid for the book, aren't you? Forty grand?" He grinned at Skye. "Forty grand for typing. Must be nice."

Skye laughed without looking up from her phone.

"Babe, be nice. She's probably saving up for a lawyer."

The editor cleared her throat and slid a single page across the table.

It was the sign-off form.

One line. One signature. Ghostwriter approval of final manuscript.

"It's a formality," she said brightly. "Your contract gives you approval. We just need you to confirm the text is accurate and complete. Then the launch goes ahead, and your payment releases on Monday."

Forty thousand dollars.
