Chapter 16: Not in the Terms

I caught him with both arms, and his whole weight came down on me.

"Grandma," I said into his shoulder. "Is she..."

"Safe," Damian said. His voice was no longer a whisper. It was low and cracked and almost his own. "Beatrice put two guards under her window an hour ago. Kent is sitting in her room."

My knees gave out.

He went down with me, slowly, and we ended up on the floor of the suite with my back against the bed and his arms locked around me.

I cried into his collar.

He let me.

He said nothing, and he thought nothing but my name, again and again, and his hand moved up and down my back.

When I could breathe, I lifted my head.

His face was a few inches from mine.

"You walked," I said.

"Three steps."

"You could have fallen and broken your neck."

"You were coming home with his voice in your head. I heard it from the stairs." His thumb found the wet on my cheek. "I wasn't going to let you walk into this room alone."

I looked at his mouth.

I had been holding on to the terms for ten days.

You stay until the board votes. You touch me only if I ask.

I thought of Rhett's smooth voice saying pillow.

I thought of Damian in the doorway on his own two feet.

"Get on the bed," I said.

"I can't climb."

"I'll help."

I got my shoulder under his arm and walked him the two steps back, and he sat down hard on the edge of the mattress.

I stood between his knees.

I pulled the pins from my hair.

His eyes followed every one.

Her hands, he thought, and said it aloud in the same breath. "Your hands."

"You're allowed to say everything now."

"Then I'm going to."

I straddled his lap and put my palms flat on his chest.

His heart hammered under them.

"Clara," he said, rough. "That is not in the terms, Mrs. Wicklow."
