Chapter 21: Fifty Million

Clara's POV

He signed on the marble rail of the mezzanine, with the lobby chandelier shaking behind him.

His hand was slow, but the signature was his own.

Kent turned the page and showed it to the old director, who read it and gave a short nod.

"This releases the trust on the second page to its beneficiary today," Kent said, to the guests crowding the doors. "It was set up on the second day of the marriage, with Mrs. Beatrice Wicklow's signature as agent."

I stared at him.

"Second day," I said.

"Fifty million dollars," Damian said, "in your name, and nobody can touch it. Not me, not my family, not a judge."

My head went quiet.

"It was already mine," I said.

"Yes."

"You paid me before I'd done anything."

"I paid you because you walked into that chapel for a man you thought was gone," Damian said. "I thought I should at least keep my word."

Three hundred people were watching us.

"And you let me think I still had to earn it," I said.

His eyes dropped.

"You'd have left, if you thought you had it."

"I might have."

"I know."

I was shaking again, and this time it wasn't fear.

"Damian Wicklow," I said, loudly enough for the whole mezzanine. "You are an idiot."

Somebody laughed.

"I want to be clear," I said. "I'm keeping it."

Damian lifted his head.

"I earned every cent. I stayed when staying was dangerous. That money is mine, and I'm taking it, and no one in this building is going to call me a gold digger for it."

Nobody did.

The old director leaned on his cane and said, "I'd like it minuted that she's right."
