Chapter 22: Delaney

I pulled on a robe and ran down the east stairs with Damian one step behind me, holding the rail.

Delaney stood in the great hall, in a ruined white dress with her hair torn loose.

Two guards had her by the arms.

She was barefoot, and her mascara ran down her chin, and there was a smear of mud up one leg where she had come over the garden wall.

"There she is!" she screamed. "There's the thief!"

Beatrice stood on the staircase in a dressing gown, with Kent beside her.

The day nurse, the housekeeper and two more guards had come out of the dark to watch.

"Delaney," I said.

"Rhett's lawyers hung up on me." Her voice was high and cracked. "They froze my accounts. The cards are dead. I called my father at midnight, and he said it's all gone, it's all gone, and it's your fault."

"I'm sorry about the cards."

"You're not! You've got fifty million dollars." She lunged and the guards pulled her back. "I'm your sister. You owe me half."

"I don't," I said.

"I got you out of that basement!"

"You threw a ring at my face."

Behind her, the front doors opened.

My father came in first, in a coat over his pajamas, and my mother came after him in a green robe.

The guards stepped aside, and nobody stopped them.

"Clara," my father said. "Thank God. We've been looking for her all night."

"You followed her here."

"We need to talk," my mother said. "The family needs to talk."

"Talk," I said.

My father looked at the staff, and the guards, and Damian leaning on the rail, and his face went tight.

"We took out a loan on the house," he said. "For the wedding. The caterer, the dress, the ring, the hall. Delaney said it was safe. Wicklow money was coming."
