Chapter 8: The Board Looks

"Take your hand off him," I said.

Rhett turned his head slowly.

He didn't look startled, and he didn't look guilty.

He took his hand off the IV pole and straightened the pillow, one inch, with two fingers.

"I'm checking on my cousin," he said. "Someone ought to."

"Beatrice told you to stay out of this wing."

"And Beatrice also said I'd have my say before Friday ended," Rhett said. "It's Friday, Clara."

I had forgotten.

Behind me, feet came up the hall, and I stepped aside as Beatrice came through the doorway with the doctor.

An old man in a dark overcoat walked in after them, leaning on a cane.

He had white eyebrows and a hard, tired face, and I recognized him from the wedding.

He had sat in the second row without clapping.

"This is Mr. Wicklow's oldest director," Rhett said. "He has served on the board for thirty years. He's here as a courtesy, to witness the spouse's statement."

"I did not agree to witness anything," the old man said. "I agreed to see my friend's son."

Beatrice put a hand on my arm.

"I asked him to come," she said, very low. "Rhett said he'd go to the full board today. I thought one honest man should see Damian first."

"Then he sees a patient who cannot respond," Rhett said. "That's the whole problem. The company cannot be run by a bed. The law gives the spouse the right to certify. Clara, sign."

He took the folder from under his arm and held it out.

The old man looked at me.

"Mrs. Wicklow," he said. "Is your husband aware of us?"

I couldn't breathe.

I had made one promise to a man who couldn't speak.

We keep this between us.

Please, Damian thought, and his thoughts were quiet and tight. Do what you have to. Not the pen. Whatever else.
