Chapter 15: One Question

Nobody in the ballroom spoke.

The number glowed on the screen over Cory's head.

The managing partner stood up from the second row and walked to the foot of the stage.

"Cory," he said. "One question."

Cory looked down at him.

"The account she mentioned. The Family Future Fund. You manage it."

"Yes."

"Last Saturday at three in the morning, the balance of that account moved to Ames Events."

"I..."

"I have the notice from the bank in my pocket. It came to my phone an hour ago." The managing partner did not raise his voice. "Is that a client deposit, as the memo says?"

"It's a personal matter."

"It's a transfer on a joint account you advise on, from a firm that is named on the account's paperwork. Is it a client deposit or not?"

Cory's thumb stopped against the side of the microphone.

I had seen it stop a hundred times.

"No," he said.

A hush fell over the tables.

"Then what was it?"

Cory looked at me.

Then he looked at Whitney.

He had nothing to say, and everyone in the room could see it.

"Thank you," the managing partner said. "That's enough."

Whitney moved first.

"Don't believe this," she said, and she spun to face the room with her arms wide. "This is a marriage falling apart, and you are all watching a woman who cannot cope. Beth has been unstable for weeks. Look at her. She's hysterical."

I was standing in front of two hundred people, and I was perfectly calm.
