Chapter 17: Clean

Beth's POV

Rhonda's office smelled of burnt coffee, and she was smiling.

It was Monday morning, and I had never seen her do that.

"The judge signed the freeze at eight," she said. "Every account in Cory's name, and the fund, is locked until the audit is done."

"What about the money he moved?"

"The bank has already reversed the overnight transfer to Ames Events. What went to Willow Creek and the wedding is spent, but nothing else leaves."

I put my hand on the desk.

What was left of the savings account Cory had opened for our baby was safe.

"They can't touch it?"

"Neither can he," Rhonda said. "Only a court order opens it, and I wrote the order."

"And Whitney?"

"Whitney's bank froze her business account at nine." Rhonda slid a sheet across. "That is a list of clients who have called to cancel since Saturday night. I stopped counting at eleven."

I read it.

The bride from the studio was the first name on the page.

"She'll be sued," Rhonda said. "By the firm, for the deposit she took in Cory's name. I don't need to do anything. People are doing it for me."

"Good."

"Beth." Rhonda took off her reading glasses. "I told you I would win it clean. I think this is clean."

I laughed, and then I put my face in my hands.
