Chapter 13: Recorded

The lamp over my bench was already on when I walked into the north bay the next afternoon.

Under it lay a thick envelope from the Deschutes County Clerk, addressed to Stephanie Ansel.

A yellow sticker across the flap said RECORDED.

I hadn't ordered anything from the county.

I had watched Kendra's video a dozen times since midnight, her pink thumbnail tapping my mother's brush.

The Run was three weeks off, and I still had no plan for it. I set that aside to deal with the envelope.

I opened it standing up, with my jacket still on.

Inside were two stamped pages and a notary's seal.

Rafe Brasher conveyed the north bay of the Mill Street building to Stephanie Ansel, with the spray booth, the clean room and the strip of lot in front of it.

Free and clear. For one dollar.

I read it twice. Then I read the date at the bottom.

It was signed the morning I arrived, six hours before Dutch and his five patches came to the gate.

Six hours before I stood in this bay and asked him, "Is this where you hand me the deed?"

He had already handed it over. He'd just left out telling me.

"Boss."

The foreman stood in the doorway with a rag in her hands and her gray crew cut standing up on one side.

"I saw the envelope come," she said. "I'd have hidden it, but I thought you'd find out worse from the county."
