Chapter 15: The Way In
Norman Mabry was sitting on the tailgate of his green pickup with his hat on his knee when we came down.
He stood up slowly. He had driven eight hours with a motorcycle on a trailer, and he looked every one of his sixty-one years.
Rafe stopped three steps behind me and put his hands in his pockets.
"I'll stand here," he said. "I won't talk."
"Good," I said.
Norman looked from him to me and understood who was in charge of that lot.
"Ms. Ansel. Thank you for seeing me."
"You drove a long way."
"I did." He nodded at the trailer. "That's the bike for the fortieth. A 1985 Panhead the club bought new, back when my father was president. We've run it every Founders Run."
"Kendra's going to paint it."
"Kendra told the whole club she was going to paint it. Nobody asked her to." His mouth tightened. "I saw the video with your mother's brush in her hand."
"So you know what it is."
"I know now." He turned the hat over. "I'm asking you to paint it instead."
The foreman had come out and was pretending to check a tire on the other side of the lot.
"Why would I do anything for the club?" I said.
"You wouldn't. I'm not asking for the club." He swallowed. "I'm asking for the bike. It has forty years on it, and it deserves a hand like yours."
I looked at the Panhead on the trailer.
The tank was bare steel, dull and dinged. Somebody had left it unpainted on purpose, waiting for a hand worth putting on it.
